September is a month for caretaking and preparation so, with the winter months looming, here are a few tasks to focus on in order to keep your garden looking fantastic:
• Plant spring-flowering bulbs to ensure you have beautiful blooms next year
• Clean out your greenhouse and make space for all your autumn planting
• Cover your garden pond with netting before leaf-fall begins
• Ensure your water butt is clean and working so it can handle the Autumn rain
• Collect and sow seeds from your hardy perennial plants to keep the colour in your garden over Christmas
• Harvest potatoes, onions, sweetcorn, runner beans, raspberries, tomatoes and courgettes
• Close greenhouse vents and doors on an evening to maintain warmth overnight
• Water houseplants less frequently
• Rake your lawn and lay down turf or seed, if necessary
