WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HARDWOOD AND SOFTWOOD GARDEN FURNITURE?

First the facts! If the trees “seed” has a nutty shell or a coat, it’s hardwood. If it hasn’t, it’s softwood. Another indicator is that evergreen trees, including pine and spruce are classed as softwoods.

When it comes to choosing wooden garden furniture there are benefits in choosing both types. Hardwood is usually the more expensive and if properly maintained can be left in the garden all year round. By contrast timber garden furniture made from softwood must be stored indoors over winter.

However, both will go grey unless properly looked after, and softwood garden furniture will also last for years if carefully treated and stained.

WHICH IS THE BEST ENVIRONMENTAL OPTION FOR WOODEN GARDEN FURNITURE

If environmental concerns drive your choice of wooden garden furniture there is a balance between the longer lasting properties of hardwood and the lower carbon impact of softwood.

Because hardwood is from trees which grow slowly, often in tropical areas, they cost more to grow and are transported over longer distances. By contrast softwood furniture is sourced from trees harvested closer to the UK and the trees grow much faster. Less energy is used for drying and cutting, so they can be deemed to have a lower carbon footprint.
